OUR MISSION

Addressing hunger and food insecurity among senior citizens is an important part of the Mary E. Bivins Foundation’s mission. Representatives from the Amarillo Area Foundation, Harrington Cancer and Health Foundation, High Plains Christian Ministries Foundation, and the Mary E. Bivins Foundation gathered in 2017 to discuss the issue.

The Mary E. Bivins Foundation committed resources to enable an in-depth study of hunger and food insecurity among older adults living in the Texas Panhandle. Published by the Foundation in January of 2018, the Senior Hunger Study (1) identified the scope of hunger and food insecurity among seniors in the Texas Panhandle; (2) produced a list of resources; and (3) served as a catalyst for discussion and collaboration among organizations already serving the growing food insecure, senior population.

The Mary E. Bivins Foundation continues to address hunger and food insecurity among senior adults through the following efforts:

     √ Create targeted grantmaking programs

           √ Healthy Seniors Grant Program

           √ Rapid Response Grant Program

     √ Support innovative programs

     √ Collect data

     √ Coordinate community conversations

√ Host the Senior Food Security Forum

The Mary E. Bivins Foundation Board of Directors is committed to finding solutions that address hunger and food insecurity among older adults living in the Texas Panhandle.
