Support for performing tasks of daily living is out there. From mobility to even playing video games, there are devices that can help you do what you need and want to live an active and fulfilling life.

Assistive Technology

The mission of the Texas Technology Access Program (TTAP) is to increase access for people with disabilities and those who are aging to Assistive Technology (AT) tools and services.

AT may provide individuals with more control over their immediate environments; an enhanced ability to function independently; potential access to education, vocation and employment; and more opportunities for recreation/leisure activities and community engagement.

TTAP provides AT Device Loans, Demonstration Centers, Recycle/Reuse Programs, and Financing. Short-term device loans are available for 35 days. Individuals with disabilities or those who are aging may borrow devices to see if they can work well for them. Devices range from items which improve hearing, vision, and speech communication, but also technology for the home or even playing video games.

For example, you can borrow a Google Nest Smart Kit which includes a Google Nest Mini, a Philips Hue Bluetooth Starter Kit, Ring Doorbell, IPad with case, Kardia Mobile, Distance thermometer, oximeter, and blood pressure cuff.

Independent Living Services

Panhandle Independent Living Center (PILC) provides Independent Living Services (ILS) for the hard of hearing/deaf, visually impaired, blind, and those with mobility needs. They can provide hearing aids, visual aids, and mobility services such as ramps.

At the initial contact appointment, an ILS counselor will gather information to determine eligibility pertaining to the consumer’s service request. Information obtained will include verification of income and proof of residence in the state of Texas. After determining eligibility, the case goes to “active services” status where we obtain assessments and estimates of the needed equipment and/or services. We then submit a request for approval of the necessary purchases. Once approval is obtained the equipment and services are purchased and delivered. They do not provide surgeries or extensive home modifications.

Wheelchairs and Other Assistive Devices

The Sister-Bear Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hope and independence to individuals with neurological injuries, illness, and those who are mobility impaired by providing funding awards to providers for wheelchairs, wheelchair accessories/modifications, wheelchair lifts, vehicle modifications, specialty beds and mattresses, home medical supplies, bath/shower chairs, patient lifts, home modifications, and more.

Accessible Ramps

The Texas Ramp Project is a nonprofit organization that provides wheelchair ramps to low-income older adults and people with disabilities identified by local healthcare providers. Ramps are built by local volunteers.

The Texas Ramp Project accepts referrals only from qualified organizations and healthcare professionals. If you or a family member are in need of a wheelchair ramp, please do not apply directly. Instead, reach out to your healthcare provider, social worker, or a community organization to submit a referral on your behalf.
